How To Build A Rabbit Trap

First of all, before starting to build a rabbit trap you have to know where you will be placing it because if you place it in an area where there aren’t any rabbits then your efforts were made for nothing as you won’t be catching anything. Here is an example of the trails made by a rabbit, if you find similar tracks, then you have found your place for a rabbit trap:

If you have problems with rabbits then the best solution is to build a wooden cage trap. Live trapping isn’t that efficient in the summer months due to the fact that there is a lot of vegetation so you will have problems luring the rabbits. If you prefer using live traps, place them in an area where there are lots of rabbits. Live traps should measure 6 x6x 24. A rabbit proof fencing might come in hand, here is an example:

Here is the materials list for building a rabbit trap:

All box parts can be built from a single 1″ x 8″ board 10 ft. long
Lever: 3/4″x 3/4″ x 181/2″
Pivot: 3/4″ x 3/4″ x 71/2″
Guides: 3/4″ x 3/4″ x height of side
Trigger: 3/8″ or 1/2″ dowel 11 inches long

Here is the blueprint for the rabbit trap:

To be efficient, the rabbit trap should be made out of good quality lumber. The door and the guides are the critical points, due to the fact that gravity must close the door once the trigger is tripped. Make sure that there is enough space between the guides so that the door will slide without binding. Many people extend the guides about approximately 1 inch above trap’s top in order to support the door. Once the door is raised and the trigger’s set, at least 2 ( the more, the better ) inches of the door should be in the guide tracks. The opening should be 4 inches high, or more. You can adjust the height by changing the string’s length between the lever and the door. The trigger is not that complex, though it may require some delicate tuning in order to insure a fast release once the contact is made.

This is a versatile type of trap because with little modifications in the trap’s size during the construction, it can be adapted to catch other smaller or larger animals. When it comes down to the baiting aspect, opinions vary, some people don’t even place baits because they think that baits might attract skunks or opossums, while other use carrots, corn or apples.

All in all, building a rabbit trap isn’t that hard if you take things nice and slowly. Caution: traps must be used in accordance with the state in which you will be placing it. You must obtain certain permits before placing a trap. The trap must be checked everyday and removed if not used anymore. Visualize the blueprint thoroughly and you will not have any problems building it.
