Snowshoe Rabbit Hunting

The snowshoe rabbit ( Lepus Americanus ) is in fact referred to as a varying hare due to the fact that this animal has the ability to change its color from warm-weather brown to the winter white, giving the animal efficient camouflage from both two and four legged predators but there are some cases in which this changing of the color is in favor for the hunter.

The cold fall weather, the shorter days and the imminent snow causes the rabbit to change its color but from time to time, winter arrives late, giving the hunter the possibility to catch white rabbits on brown ground, an excellent opportunity. This period is usually between the beginning of December and mid-December and will give the hunter a short-term advantage although these rabbits somehow know that they stand out and are more wily and wary than the usual.

Although it is recommended to chase rabbits with your dog, there are many efficient hunters that don’t use a dog for rabbit hunts. The most important aspect regarding rabbit hunting is to walk as little as possible and to observe everything that is going around because if you plan on hunting in a rush you will only make noise and scare the rabbits away. Experienced hunters recommend to move for 5-10 steps and then stop and observe the surroundings.

What the regular hunters needs to do is to carefully and slowly search beneath bushes, under fir bows and other similar locations because it is almost incredible how these animals can hide in a minimal cover, you never know what might be behind a small bush. Searching for the snowshoe rabbit in the white snow is a difficult thing to do so experienced hunters advise the regular hunters to look for a specific feature or a minuscule motion. Hunters should try to pinpoint a dark glistening eye, a twitching nose, a brownish tinted ear or even the flick of an ear among brambles and/or brushes.

Hunting Dogs Reviews

If you plan your rabbit hunting with a couple of friends, the chances of spotting a snowshoe rabbit and getting an efficient shot will increase dramatically. You and your hunting buddies will spread out in a skirmish line, remembering to always stay parallel within constant sight of each other as they move & stop in a stealth matter through a cover. When one of the shooters detects a rabbit although he might not have the best place for an efficient shot, surely one of the other gunners will be in a better position for a deadly shot.

If hunting in a location where there are fence lines and hedgerows, one of the hunters will push up the middle while the other gunners will work the outside edges, waiting for a flushed bunny to break out into the open, giving one of the hunters a chance for a deadly shot. If hunting in areas where there are brush piles, this is the exact same situation as before, one of the hunters basically works as the dog, thrashing around in the branches and limbs until a rabbit starts running.

All things considered, hunting snowshoe rabbit can be tricky but exciting in the same time. You might want to try this type of hunting because we assure you that you won’t be disappointed as these rabbits posses unique qualities that will cause difficulties even if you are an experienced hunter but as they say: the chase is better than the catch.
